1.4.1 Chemical properties. Most fissure sealants on the market are filled or unfilled, one- or two-component materials. Most of them contain methacrylate, e.g. bis-GMA, as the resin base. In addition to resin based sealants, glass-ionomer cements are also used for fissure sealing. There are fissure sealants with or without fluoride release and self- or light-cured ones. Self-curing (chemically curing) fissure sealants incorporate a catalyst, usually benzoyl peroxide, which initiates polymerization. Light-curing sealants are polymerized with the help of an appropriate light source. The polymerization of these sealants is also initiated by a catalyst (e.g. camphorquinone), which absorbs light of a specified wavelength. Most fissure sealants – including the Helioseal products – are light-cured. Generally, the tooth structure has to be conditioned with etching gel prior to applying the sealant.
